Goochland County Animal Shelter
11,600 SF
The new facility was constructed on the same site as the former, antiquated facility. The new building will not only meet all current codes and regulations, it will provide much better housing for the animals and a much better quality work environment for the employees. Though this is a public shelter, the County has received a tremendous amount of support from the private sector. The Goochland Pet Lovers were able to raise $750,000 to contribute toward this facility.
Visitors are greeted in a large lobby with views to the cat adotion room and real life rooms. A information desk in the lobby serves as a transaction counter for animals surrendered or adopted. The new shelter will have larger dog runs (35 total), with state of the art finishes, allowing easier cleaning and happier canines. 50 cats can be housed in either stainless steel cages or vertical cat towers. A sallyport is also included with the new building allowing ease of access during loading and unloading operations for the Animal Control staff. A small veterinary clinic is also included in the building for minor surgeries.
The buildling was designed to be expanded as the need arises. The shelter typically serves 900 to 1,000 animals annually, with 60% of the population being canines.
